I had found a version of this overly ornate "scarf" joint online, using dowels at various angles to secure the position of two pieces relative to each other. It offered an integral way to create an X shaped cantilever table base by extending one of dowels as a structural element. This Ash wood slab had the perfect rounded live edge end with a pithy center knot located precisely where the extended dowel would intersect the top.
